How to read a SURF NEXT forecast

Each SURF NEXT forecast page is built for one Australian surf break. The interactive dashboard summarises swell, wind, tides, and a session rating across an 8-day window (longer outlooks may appear for members when available). You do not need an account to browse the free 8-day view.

Spot context such as break type and preferred swell / wind windows helps you read the charts in place — they summarise how exposure and local seabed geometry usually interact with arriving conditions.

1. Open a spot from the spot directory, a state or region hub, or Spot Finder.
2. Check Live Conditions for the nearest model slot: surf height character, wind state, and water or air context when shown.
3. Scan Active Swells (or the swell column in the timeline) for height, period, and direction — long-period energy that can reach the break through local bathymetry usually matters more than raw height alone.
4. Check wind direction and strength. Offshore or light sideshore is typically cleaner; strong onshore often chops the face even when swell size looks inviting.
5. Align the session with tide. Many breaks prefer a mid or high push; others prefer a drain. Use the tide chart with the timeline, not in isolation.
6. Use the session rating as a quick scan across the day, then verify with swell, wind, and tide before you commit.

Live Conditions is the "now" (or nearest slot) snapshot: surf size character, wind, and related metrics with colour cues that track quality, not decoration. Scrubbing the timeline updates that snapshot so you can preview later slots without leaving the card.

Treat it as a high-signal summary. If Live Conditions looks average but a long-period swell is lining up with the coast and light offshore wind, dig into the swell and wind detail before writing the session off.

Swell height, period, and direction come from marine models (see Data sources). Period often separates clean groundswell from short, locally generated chop. Direction tells you whether energy is arriving from an open sector for that stretch of coast.

Ratings also use bathymetry and swell gating: shelf depth, channels, and headland shadowing affect how much of an offshore swell can shoal into the break. Swell from poorly exposed bearings contributes less than swell that can reach the pin through the local seabed geometry.

Wind is shown with direction and strength. Light offshore or glassy conditions usually improve texture; strong onshore often degrades it even when swell size looks inviting.

Morning land breezes and afternoon sea breezes can flip a session within a few hours — use the timeline, not only the first value you see.

The tide chart shows stage across the day. Reefs, points, and sandbars respond differently: some need water over the bank; others prefer a dropping tide that focuses the peak. Pair tide with swell period and wind rather than treating high tide as universally "better."

Session ratings combine gated swell energy, local wind, tidal stage, and coastal geometry into a scanable score for each timeslot. They are a prioritisation tool across the week, not a promise that conditions will match the colour on the day.

When a rating looks strong, confirm the underlying swell, wind, and tide. When it looks weak but you know the break fires on a narrow window, check whether that window still appears in the detail panels.

Dawn patrol after a south-east swell. Open your local forecast the evening before. Confirm swell direction and period look capable of reaching the break, and overnight wind trends offshore or light into first light. Set an alarm for the best-rated morning slot, then re-check Live Conditions before you leave.

Weekend trip planning. Compare two or three nearby spots on the same swell. Prefer the break whose coastal exposure and wind look better aligned with the modelled direction and breeze. Use state or region hubs to browse options, then open each forecast timeline side by side in separate tabs.

Lunch-break check. Scrub Live Conditions to the next two hours. If wind is swinging onshore and tide is leaving the bank, skip it. If a mid-period pulse is still in play with manageable wind, you have a short session case — still verify water safety yourself.
